He has been actively improvising since the early 1970s and was a member of I.L.E.A's Cockpit Theatre Music Ensemble, Tony Oxley's Angular Apron, Barry Guy's London Jazz Composers Orchestra and the Ballet Rambert Orchestra. He works with musicians including Jon Corbett, David Toop, Phil Minton and Paul Hession and has toured all over Europe and as far afield as North America and Siberia. He recorded the solo album 'Still Outside' in 1980 and most recently 'Trap Street', with Steve Beresford (electronics) and Roger Turner (percussion) which was released in May on Emanem. "Enormous energy... he can make the trombone sound like frustrated elephants courting or like the finish at Brands Hatch." MELODY MAKER Yorkshire
Evening Press review by
Charles Hutchinson 'Tomlinson is a particular star, whether whispering the quietest of breaths or braying with feisty abandon.' Michael Rosenstein - THE SQUID'S EAR 'The trombone-propelled creativity of Alan Tomlinson is one of the most engaging and inventive you can get these days, only comparable to the very geniuses (like Paul Hubweber or Paul Rutherford, just to name a couple). His sound is in such a great shape.. and says 'go to hell' to any usual method of playing.' Massimo Ricci - TOUCHING EXTREMES 'He's a genius - just amazing!'
