by Martin Wainwright Fish, chips and mushy peas were joined last night by a new menu item - music from a classical trombonist perched in the back of a mobile frying van. Startled customers on Steve Tate's evening run round seven villages in North Yorkshire were serenaded as they queued for takeaways, in a novel attempt to get challenging modern music better understood. Honking out improvised passages from his repertoire, trombonist Alan Tomlinson shattered the evening peace of Barton-le-Street with a fanfare, followed by a 10-minute concert for the usual Tuesday evening queue. "It's hard to promote this sort of contemporary classical music," said Simon Thackray of The Shed, the minuscule concert hall at Barton's neighbouring village, Brawby, where cramped audiences of up to 70 attend concerts regularly broadcast on national radio. "Improvised work needs to be brought to a wider audience and this seemed an obvious way to do that, apart from being a fun thing to do." © Martin Wainwright / Guardian Yorkshire
