THE SHED
"Weird and wonderful" Daily Telegraph The Shed Gigs 2008

The Shed music and poetry venue was created by Simon Thackray in 1992. Based in the village of Hovingham (originally in Brawby), The Shed is close to the market towns of Malton, Helmsley, Pickering and Kirkbymoorside, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors. We welcome people from across the UK and Europe who travel to see world class musicians and poets perform in this intimate and friendly space. The finest modern jazz, blues, folk, country, classical, world and improvised music, comedy, poetry and knitting are all performed in front of Simon's old shed door. With an audience of just over 100 people and candlelit tables, the atmosphere in The Shed is special.

"The Shed is one of few venues in the country with a location as inspiring as its programme of live music and performance art. The latter's affinity with the surreal end of the creative spectrum is largely thanks to the boundless imagination of its creator, Simon Thackray, whose ideas are often too large to be limited to his makeshift stage..." Time Out: 1000 things to do in Britain

"For the past 16 years, The Shed, near the market town of Malton, has been responsible for some of the smallest and most inspired art events in the country.' Alfred Hickling Guardian

"And no matter how strange they sound, there always seem to be people prepared to come from miles away to get in on the act - artists, musicians and poets, as well as spectators.. ..the art world could do with more of his kind of far-reaching woolly thinking." Dominic Cavendish Daily Telegraph

The Shed has a national reputation for creating and staging unique art events. A regular host to BBC Radio 4 and featured in the national press and on TV, The Shed is more than just a little venue with a big atmosphere. Here you will experience extraordinary things - from Mrs Boyes' Bingo, Hat (words, music and knitting), Lol Coxhill in a skip, the famous Yorkshire Pudding Boat Race, the Fish and Chip van tour and the North Yorkshire Elvis Bus Tour. The Shed has produced some of the most succesful art events of recent years.

"Most of these gigs instantly transfer to the realms of myth - legendary evenings with that elusive "were you there when...?" mystique which must make other arts programmers tear their hair." Yorkshire Post
