The Shed's Spring / Summer
Programme 2008

"For the past 16 years, The Shed, near the market town
of Malton, has been responsible for some of the smallest and
most inspired art events in the country." Alfred Hickling,
Guardian
Ian McMillan's Welcome to
The Shed!
It seems to me that history is
finally catching up with the vanguard that is The Shed: the rural
village hall circuit is blossoming and there are more and more
intimate House Concerts happening all over the world. The other
week Time Out magazine featured small venues in the capital (that's,
er...London, not Malton), and artists and bands are setting up
galleries and gigs in the unlikeliest of places. And of course
The Shed was one of the first, one of the first venues to promote
top-class music and poetry in a rural setting, so hats off to
The Shed!
But wait. Put the hat back on.
Firmly. Because The Shed is so much more than a small venue making
a big splash in a massive world; it's a way of thinking, a philosophy
of what art can be and what it can do. The Shed puts new music
in a rural setting and somehow it seems to fit. Think of the
Yorkshire Pudding Boat Race. Think of The Elvis Bus Tour and
those knitted Elvis wigs. Think of avant-garde trombone in the
chip van queue. Think of Lol Coxhill playing in a skip. Think
of HAT, celebrating the joy of knitting and anticipating the
current knitting-trendiness by a good few years.
Now take the hat off again. Now
chuck it high in the air to celebrate The Shed and all its works.
And go along this season for poetry, jazz, folk and a damn good
time. And go along to York University to feast on a retrospective
of Simon Thackray's photographs from The Shed. Oh, just leave
the hat off. Just keep chucking it in the air. Just keep cheering!

Helen Watson and Snake Davis
Saturday 22 March £15
Hovingham village hall
Helen Watson - guitar, vocals
Snake Davis - saxes, flute
Dave Bowie - double bass
Mark Creswell - guitar
Helen Watson began performing on the club circuit
during the late 'sixties. She was singer with the renowned blues
band LOOSE LIPS; a member of the Manchester quartet WELL KNIT
FRAMES; and was a backing singer with CARMEL on an extensive
world tour. Helen's unique style earned her an enviable reputation
which, in the early 80's, led to a recording contract with EMI.
Helen's first album Blue Slipper was produced in Los Angeles
by the legendary Glyn Johns; musicians included Albert Lee, Little
Feat and Bernie Leadon. Helen toured Europe with Joe Cocker.
Her second EMI album - The Weather Inside was also produced by
Glyn Johns and featured a powerful duet with Andy Fairweather-Low
on Hanging Out The Washing.
Where does Snake Davis come
in? M People and Eurythmics
saxophonist Snake played on Helen's first big album Blue Slipper
and subsequently they toured Europe together opening up for Joe
Cocker. Snake suggested the idea of performing with Helen at
The Shed and Simon jumped at the chance and booked their first
gig on the spot. This new project features Dave Bowie and Mark
Creswell from The Suspicions and promises a night of great songs,
passion and lots of fun!
"Helen Watson, blessed
with excellent phrasing and control, slips effortlessly from
breathy, seductive jazz to gritty R&B." Folk On Tap
"Kate Bush in the real
world." NME

Michael Marra
Saturday 12 April £12.50

Hovingham village hall
Expelled from school at 14 as
a trouble maker, Marra's songs are '...strained through a gauze
of ragtime blues-piano and shot with filaments of traditional
folk and American voices... wickedly funny and sometimes achingly
poignant, parables... in vocals from a Woodbined voice.' Scotsman on Sunday
Affectionately described as the
Scottish Randy Newman, Marra remains a best kept secret - except
to his fans who include Deacon Blue, Billy Connolly, Hue and
Cry and Eddie Reader - and the many artists who've covered his
songs.
"His tunes walk a razor's
edge of wit... he looks into the soul. If you discover one artist
this year you would be wise to make it Michael Marra." Folk Roots
